In 1965, in Avion, after the disasters of Courrières and Hersin, to name just those, a firedamp explosion occurred in the mines of Liévin, pit No. 7; it killed 21 miners.

But in this official history, what remains unknown is that an Algerian-born miner, Ahmed, and a Polish-born pit foreman, Stéphane, found themselves trapped at a depth of over 300 meters in an air pocket.
