Mademoiselle Else ou l'Etrangère

It is an interior monologue that traces the cruel ordeal experienced by young Else, painfully an "outsider" like many of Schnitzler's heroines, offered as a sacrifice to save her father, a gambler burdened with debt and facing ruin.

One can see through this tragic story a metaphor for the moral and social decline of Vienna at the beginning of the twentieth century.
