At his death, the composer had completed the Introit and Kyrie in their entirety, and largely defined the content of the following five parts, from the Dies Irae to the Confutatis. The work has since sparked a thousand hypotheses, numerous versions of the unfinished pages, and above all splendid interpretations: it magnetizes listener and performer alike, standing almost entirely in the form left by Mozart.
