After a somewhat dissolute youth, Doctor Moulineaux leads a quiet and respectable life alongside his wife Yvonne.

Caught up by his old demons, Moulineaux stays out all night to rendezvous with the beautiful Suzanne Aubin, one of his patients, at the Opera Ball. It turned out badly for him, because despite the clumsy distractions of his valet Étienne, Yvonne discovered everything!

To shelter his new adulterous affair from prying eyes, Moulineaux decides to rent a small mezzanine formerly occupied by a seamstress.

Yet his respite is short-lived. Barely settled in the premises with his mistress, our respected doctor sees a succession of visitors as whimsical as they are unwelcome arrive, threatening at any second to blow the lid off the situation: cheated husband, mother-in-law, landlord, ice-floe queen, and former seamstress clients—these intrusive troublemakers plunge Moulineaux into a whirlwind of lies and stratagems to keep his adultery from coming to light.
